Newcastle United right-back Jamie Sterry has joined League Two side Crewe Alexandra on loan until the end of the season.

As reported on the club’s official website, the 23-year-old flyer rejoins Crewe after spending a successful spell at Gresty Road at the same point last season.

Sterry made nine appearances for the League Two side last term, and will hope to help Crewe climb the table, with the club currently sitting in 14th place in the fourth-tier.

OPINION

It is a bit of a surprise to see Sterry loaned out by Rafa Benitez, with the 23-year-old having been a part of several match day squads for the Magpies so far this season. Sterry has still made just eight appearances for his boyhood club, but has served as a useful back-up for Benitez at points over the past few years. Obviously a loan makes sense with regards to experience, with Sterry set to earn more first-team football than he would at St. James’ Park. This move may suggest that Benitez feels he has enough cover at right-back, or that there is a new signing imminent. Looking further into the future, there have to be questions asked about Sterry’s long-term career at Newcastle. The right-back is already 23 years old, and is unfortunately unlikely to get a starting spot anytime soon. At that age a player needs to be playing regularly, and sitting on the bench for another year would do him no good at all.
