Newcastle United are reportedly back in the hunt to sign Swansea centre-back Federico Fernandez, and many fans have taken to Twitter to react enthusiastically to the news.
As reported by Sun correspondent Alan Nixon on his personal Twitter account, the Magpies have reignited their interest in Fernandez ahead of Thursday’s deadline, with a permanent deal on the cards.
Many fans have now reacted to the news on Twitter, with the vast majority of supporters seeming happy at the thought of signing Fernandez, but many remain unconvinced they will actually make the move.
Nothing but Newcastle have rounded up some of the best tweets:
We need the CB cover, but Cashley will not spend £10m on a 29 year old.#NUFC #inRafaWeTrust

Just pay it ffs, if we get another centre back injured we’re screwed. We’ve sold our CB cover for peanuts and lost Lejeune. Aren’t we down to just Lascelles, Schar and Clark? #nufc

He’s a good player and cheaper then other options available

Federico Fernández is still being chase despite going quiet early in the window. This would be cover for Lejeune while he is out. A player like Fernández would be perfect considering he thrived under Benítez at Napoli.

OPINION
These fans seem quite happy about the thought of signing Fernandez, who has been a reported target for the Magpies for much of the summer. Whether it is a good move will however depend on the terms agreed between the clubs, with Swansea previously said to be demanding £10million for the 29-year-old. That would not be great value for money for Newcastle, who cannot attempt to loan Fernandez owing to their two domestic loans for Salomon Rondon and Kenedy already agreed this summer. One big positive is that Fernandez has previously played under Rafa Benitez at Napoli, and that previous relationship should mean he makes a big impact at St. James’ Park should a move materialise.
