Newcastle United are confident of getting two defensive deals done ahead of the transfer window shutting on Thursday, according to the Chronicle.

The Northern newspaper claim that the Magpies are hoping to recruit a new left-back as well as a new central defender and hope they can complete those potential deals early on deadline day.

The Chronicle report that the Magpies remain confident about strengthening those two position despite a set-back in their pursuit of Paris-St Germain defender Stanley N’Soki.

It is believed that the French giants are demanding payments upfront for their talented defender and hopes are fading that the Magpies can afford a deal to get his services.

OPINION

While the pursuit of N’Soki clearly isn’t going to plan at least according to this report, alternatives have already been sought after. The current PSG defender would have a fabulous addition to Rafa Benitez’s side but if the Magpies don’t believe they have the funds to secure his services then they shouldn’t waste their time trying to get PSG to lower their demands. Hopefully the Magpies are right to be confident about bringing a new-centre and left-back as they definitely need reinforcements in those areas. Though Benitez could also do with welcoming a new right-back to the club as DeAndre Yedlin doesn’t exactly have much competition when it comes to keeping him on his toes regarding a place in the manager’s regular starting line-up. There’s also the worrying scenario that he could end up injured during the upcoming campaign which make the position of right-back a problem. If the Magpies can at least end the transfer window with some good news, that will least be something for Benitez and supporters to take comfort in.
