Newcastle United are not interested in a move for Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter despite reports to the contrary, according to reliable journalist Lee Ryder.

Ryder, chief Newcastle writer at the Chronicle, reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning that he had been told there was no truth in the reports linking the Magpies to the Republic of Ireland international.

The Sun claim that Newcastle are one of four clubs chasing Arter, who is said to be unlikely to play a big role for the Cherries in 2018/19 after the club-record arrival of Colombia international Jefferson Lerma.

However, following this significant update from Ryder, it looks like Newcastle are in fact not among the clubs chasing the 28-year-old.

OPINION

Arter would have been a solid yet unspectacular signing for Newcastle, who could do with some reinforcements in midfield. The Republic of Ireland international has been falling slowly out of favour under Eddie Howe on the south coast, making just 16 appearances last season, and a move away looks like a good option for the 28-year-old. That is especially true in the wake of the Cherries breaking their transfer record to sign Lerma, who performed well for Colombia at the World Cup this summer. Anyhow it does not look like Newcastle are among those clubs interested in Arter, who may be best served by dropping down to the Championship. For Newcastle, signing a new midfielder would be a good move before tomorrow’s deadline, but their priorities still remain in defence, where Rafa Benitez is attempting to secure two more signings, and it is set to be a busy couple of days ahead on Tyneside.
