Linked with a move across the Premier League to West Ham, a difficult decision remains regarding the future of the 25-year-old as Newcastle don’t want to lose his services but he’d earn the club a pretty penny- and he’s not quite as important in the squad as he used to be.
If Newcastle can negotiate the right price for Shelvey, then a sale of the England international should certainly be considered as the funds could hand Benitez the ability to complete moves on the market for a new goalkeeper and a striker.
Losing a player of Shelvey’s calibre would be a blow but there’s a big argument to suggest he’s expendable, particularly with the performances Mikel Merino has displayed since his arrival.
