Newcastle United face a stern test ahead of them in the final week of the January transfer window, as Rafael Benitez looks to bolster his side in key areas.

The Spanish boss has already secured the services of Brazilian youngster Kenedy on-loan from Chelsea but remains in the market for at least two more players, as he seeks a new goalkeeper and a talented striker.

Newcastle have been woeful in front of goal this season, scoring just 22 times in 23 matches, and the club may now be finally preparing to smash their 13-year-old transfer record in order to bring in a top-class addition.

According to Dutch outlet Voetbal InternationalNewcastle have turned their attentions towards Feyenoord’s Eredivisie winning striker Nicolai Jorgensen, who scored 21 goals in 32 games last season to fire his team to the title.

27-year-old Jorgensen had initially struggled to continue that form this season, netting nine times in 18 matches, but a huge turnaround has seen his numbers significantly improve after a run that has seen him score eight times in 10 matches.

Robin Van Persie’s return to his boyhood club last week hands Jorgensen competition for his spot in attack and the reports suggests Newcastle are eyeing a multi-million bid for the striker, which could eclipse the £16m paid for Michael Owen in 2005.

However, Sky Sports has since added that Feyenoord have rejected an initial offer from Newcastle and are seeking in excess of £20m to part ways with the forward.
