According to the Chronicle, Newcastle United are yet to give up hope of landing Everton midfielder James McCarthy this month.

The Magpies have been linked with the Republic of Ireland international since the summer and the 26-year-old will surely see his playing time at Goodison Park limited following the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin and the emergence of Tom Davies for the Toffees.

They suggest the former Wigan Athletic man would potentially be open to a move to St. James’ Park, with Rafa Benitez looking likely (for now) to lead the Magpies back into the Premier League. The 26-year-old is also said to have recently rejected a move to North East rivals Sunderland, something that is likely to go down well amongst the Toon Army.

It’s been a frustrating window so far on Tyneside, with the club yet unable to add anyone to the Spaniard’s ranks during the closing stages of the window.
