Many Newcastle fans wasted no time in reacting to the promising transfer developments surrounding the club.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United have won the race to sign defender Matthew Bondswell and have fended off interest from Premier League rivals in doing so.

Chelsea, Leeds United and West Ham are named in the report as key parties that were keen on signing the youngster, but it is Steve Bruce’s side that has pipped rival Premier League sides in the hunt for Bondswell’s services.

The 18-year-old defender is a product of the Nottingham Forest youth academy but has spent the last two-and-a-half years with German side RB Leipzig.

An England youth international, Bondswell also has senior experience on loan with Dutch second-division side FC Dordecht.

It is understood that Bondswell will initially join up with Newcastle’s under-23s squad for assessment and fans should not expect to see him jostling for league starts with the likes of Jamal Lewis and Emil Krafth immediately.

However, the prospect of Bondswell breaking into first-team plans is not off the table.

With the youngster appearing to be set to sign for Newcastle imminently, there was a clamour as fans responded to the development, taking to Twitter to express their views…

Bright future for the young lad lies ahead. If he sticks in, follows the advice of our world class coaches, takes advantage of the Premier League facilities and listens to the model pros like Jonjo he could be the next Longstaff. Dreams. @StevenHalford2
