Disgraceful Arsenal star embarrasses himself against Newcastle

Francis CoquelinReferee Andre Marriner didn’t cover himself in much glory in the Premier League encounter between Newcastle United and Arsenal at St James’ Park yesterday, but he wasn’t helped by Arsene Wenger’s players, most notably Francis Coquelin.

In addition to the red card given to Aleksandar Mitrović, Marriner handed out seven yellow cards during the course of the game, with six of those going to Newcastle players, including recent signing Florian Thauvin.

You could argue that the Frenchman deserved a yellow card for his rash tackle, but the behaviour from his compatriot was nothing short of embarrassing and if he watched the below back Coquelin should be truly ashamed…

It’s these sort of antics that make referees jobs so difficult and as if the jump from the floor wasn’t enough, he decided to throw in a few rolls afterwards for good measure.

This from the player that Wenger is touting as the defensive lynchpin in this midfield, I’m not sure you’d ever see Patrick Vieira acting like that!

@michael jordan we’ve all played the game. Doubt you made a career out of it. A lot rides on the players to remain fit week after week. I admit, the foul did not deserve a red. A yellow for sure. And as for coquelin’s actions, nothing wrong with that. Btw, a solid defensive game by you guys. 10 men down, for nearly 80 mins of the game, and still lost by an OG, full marks. A different result on another day.

A different result on another day? Yeah Arsenal taking their chances and winning comfotably.

    • Gerry Christie says:

The clip above is not the shin raking of studs that Mitrovic got sent off for. Also the clip just misses the studs on Le Coq’s ankle. It’s painfull no matter how hard you are, it’s not acting, it’s a bad foul!

  • Kipmonster says:

So much delusional claptrap! Mitrovic deserved his Red card. The offence is ‘dangerous play’ & not called ‘intent to injure’ so McLaren & whining NUFC fans are being stupid. You could easily have had another 1 or 2 Red cards. Face it,Mitrovic has been a car crash waiting to happen. You got away with a stonewall penalty that could have been a catalyst for a drubbing. It’s pathetic crying about perceived theatrics from an opponent when you should be analysing your own team’s numerous faults, poor play & decision making.

    • Pagan Rites says:

Monreal and Cocquelin are an absolute embarrassment – rolling around and then suddenly jumping up to front the Newcastle player, you could hear Coq scream like a girl simply to influence the decision. I used to like Arsenal but gone way down in my estimation. Wont win a thing as they wont be able to deal with the Stoke City’s of the division and as for Europe the same fate awaits once again after the group stage. Shame as I say I used to have the utmost respect but whinge more than Jose on a bad day

  • Thomas says:

Tom Jones, you facking idiot, you embarress your self by hidding the real tackel in the gif you showing people here. By the way the whole world agrre that was a bad tackle so why you are so stupid writting this?

    • Pagan Rites says:

Only 2 people should be embarrassed Monreal and Cocquelin although any gooner who thinks they will ever win the Premier League – squealing like pigs under challenges – total disgrace Monreal rolls 4 times writhing in fake agony and then jumps up to front the Newcastle player -cheats- no longer have any respect for Arsenal and I can tell you now they will win no silverware and wimp out of Europe straight after the group stage again. The likes of Stoke must be rubbing their hands at the thought of these girl guides skipping as high as an Olympic gymnast to avoid physical contact. Every single paper called it correctly about the Arenal players antics -embarrassing – no wonder they have a daily Arsenal

      • Peter says:

Silly boy. “Wait till you play Stoke; they’ll show you”. Stoke advanced beyond your gridiron tactics some time ago.

      • Gary says:

Keep gooning it up for McClarens tactics, you wish you had somebody as tough as Coq

      • Thomas says:

That way Newcastle not winning any game because they don’t play football, they just try to kill opponent player and yes just like Stoke your team is a shame for football.
By the way next time use glasses to watch the game before you accusing Monreal or Cocquelin.

  • Tom says:

    Delusional nonsense

  • Panther says:

Indeed the ref had a bad game, he missed a stonewall penalty for Arsenal. The whinging by Newcastle supporters is pathetic and embarrassing, they were parking the bus from the first minute. Mitrovic deserved his red card and scum football writers are trying their best to unsettle Coquelin. Aftet the C Palace game some cretins in the media were saying he should of been sent off, even though his first yellow was a ridiculous decision by the ref and never a yellow.

    • Pagan Rites says:

Shake your head you donut and watch Coq’s antics he is a total embarrassment, rolling around squealing like a pig with its throat cut, ridiculous double twirls to avoid any contact whatsoever but make it look as if he’d been taken out by a sniper. He’s the worst kind of footballer a cheat to his fellow pro. Monreal no better rolls 4 times in fake agony and then immediately jumps up to front the offender. Every club will have watched that and got Arsenal sussed. Good job there arent any muddy pitches @ 1970s Arsenal wouldnt come out for fear of getting dirty. The rest of football is laughing at Arsenal’s antics and i have lost all respect for them. Bet my house no trophies and never during the blindmans reign will there be another PL title.

  • lewis matula says:

Come on guys why do you have to keep on embarrassing yourselves like this, this is pathetic to say the least. One didn’t have to use the microscope to see that the tackle and the intention was vicious and unsportsmanlike. How many times have we seen Arsenal players being savagely tackled and their careers almost cut short simple reason being that they play in good spirit of the game, and to my utter chagrin nobody and l mean nobody has had the decency and moral obligation to voice their concerns. Is this how football is supposed to be played especially in the EPL? ….l doubt that England will ever win major trophy in the foreseeable future as long as these vicious tackles are said to be normal by the general football public. Here they are a team being accused of being ‘sissies’ simple for sticking by the rules of the game, a team which has had some of its players’ careers ruined by these barbaric challenges yet still accused of play acting. In the initial years of the Wenger era Arsenal was accused of playing it rough and the condemnation was instant and overwhelming, so Arsenal toned down on its type of play to suit the needs of the ‘game’,so he started to buy and groom a certain type of a player to change completely the philosophy of the club thinking Arsenal will be accepted by the general football fraternity of England by to all the football loving community of the world the accusations have increased as has the injuries to Arsenal’s players in the past couple of years, it is quite evident that the type of play has never been a problem but the problem has and it still is ‘Arsenal FC’ anything that’s done is always denigrated irrespective of anything, the double standards are so acute and embarrassingly obvious

If Newcastle had tried to play football, rather than going in to so many tackles with their studs up, they might not be making this sort of ridiculous accusation. Even in the final minutes, when they had nothing to lose, they were still focused on Arsenal rather than trying to score themselves.

  • Quandary says:

    Wa wa wa

  • Oli says:

That clip cuts off the bottom of the video showing that Coq’s studs get caught back in the ground while Thauvin is still going through him and it twists his ankle, very painful and definite yellow card.

  • Nick says:

I hope I’m not too unwelcome on your site, and don’t worry, I won’t stay long. I don’t blame any of you for not watching MOTD. I never watch MOTD when Arsenal lose. But the replay on MOTD shows clearly that Thauvin trod hard – in fact launched himself – onto Coquelin’s Achilles’ tendon. Coquelin does not normally make a fuss, and he is being singled out because he’s our sole defensive midfielder worthy of the name, and hence one of our most important players. He also happens to have a short fuse, perhaps not surprisingly. Maclaren’s number 2 will have watched some Arsenal games and told your players what to do and how to hurt us. Sorry, but you also have to do your damage fairly. The clip on your site is beautifully edited to avoid showing what actually happened. Well done, most of us would have done the same. And incidentally I love your fans, but the objective ones are better than those who ain’t

  • gunner 77 says:

He caught le coq right ankle but your not showin whole picture .

  • Stubo says:

This is an over reaction on your part Mr blogger. Saying that Le Coq was over reacting gives the very strong impression that you have not actually played contact sports, and makes you seem less credible. That reaction of jumping up to release the pressure and pain on the ankle is a perfectly natural response. Also, in general, Newcastle, who I like as a team, just got the physicality all wrong yesterday. They were clumsy and deserved the cards. Good defensive display though. If they’d sorted themselves out they could have taken something from that game.

  • Uwot? says:

Oi!pagan rites boy!don’t be a muppet all your life!take your “southern softies” blinkers off & own up & grow up.we don’ t need your respect.if indeed we ever had it.fouls, some dangerous were committed.it happens.it’s football.at least some of the Geordie army are honest enough to admit it.as regards to “the orcs”(Stoke)you!re welcome to join them if that anti football turns you on.but I would think Newcastle has more pride & class than that…..

  • VIERA says:

Squealing like a girl???, Le coq played against manure in the fa cup 3 days after having his nose squashed , and no mask , 2 mins into the game Fuzz head fellaini elbowed him and sterted the bleeding again , that’s all the cretin did throughout the game , le coq made sure of that , you need to man up and realise you are sh*t just like pardew did

  • Tel says:

I always thought Newcastle fans liked decent football .. This article is unbelievable tbeir team of Neanderthals didn’t put one single move together all game !!! NOT 1 !! Got away with a blatant penalty couldn’t get near the ball and just kicked arsenal players .. A pathetic and embarrassing display .. I don’t think Cech touched ball whole game … Every pundit on bbc sky and bt backed the ref on every decision bar the pen …u Newcastle fans really need to wake up

  • The mag says:

Football’s a contact sport.arsenals played like that for years(little girls).should be ashamed to be located in our capital.southern fairy’s.

  • consolsbob says:

With the over physical approach Newcastle were using it seems you all need a reality check on what constitutes a foul. Coquelin had been kicked in the ankle and was clearly jumping to avoid the rest of the tackle sliding into him, with, you can see, a leg and boot raised to catch him if he hadn’t moved.

Overall your team was a disgrace and to blame the referee for doing his job and a footballer for trying to avoid the violence directed at him shows a severe loss of reality.

I have always respected your club and fans but you let yourself down yesterday.

  • Nick says:

Joke of an article from bitter Newcastle fans. The way your fans were jeering the ref after making late, dangerous challenges was a disgrace. Even the one video you have used as evidence doesn’t even show the studs out ankle clamp that the tackle was. It’s the premier league not Sunday league. Mariner had a solid game if anything the only terrible decision he made was not awarding the clear penalty.

    Arsenal 3points-period

  • jenaldo says:

I don’t know who’s more pathetic, the players, the coach, the fans or indeed this blogger. A team back at home following a wonderful desplay against the red sh*ts from MANchester, you’d think that would’ve inspired them to take the game to the gunners but instead they now have a stupid club fine. Seriously “fartpies”? Be realistic and play some football next time ok.
