Oscar CardozoA new name that Newcastle United are being linked with today in their search for a striker is Oscar Cardozo, but would the Magpies really pay £10 million for a 30-year-old?

The Mirror is crediting Newcastle with an interest in the Benfica striker, but this would go against Alan Pardew’s transfer policy on two accounts: he’s a good way over 26 years of age and he’s not French!

The Paraguayan international is a top class player though and clearly impressed Pardew when Newcastle came up against Benfica in the Europa League last season.

Cardozo netted a penalty in that encounter at the Stadium of Light and has scored goals for fun in Portugal, tallying more than 150 goals in all competitions in six years at the club.

At 6ft 5in tall, Cardozo is a huge presence and is renowned for his incredibly powerful left-footed strike, as well as his abilities from the penalty spot.

At the back end of last year, Cardozo scored from the spot in the loss for Benfica against Chelsea in the Europa League final, and the domestic cup final was equally as frustrating, with the Paraguyan confronting manager Jorge Jesus at the end of the game.

Earlier this summer his agent Pedro Aldave indicated that a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce was all but done, stating: “The negotiations between the two clubs are going well and the agreement is practically closed.”

However, Cardozo is still on Benfica’s books and could well be a surprise signing for Newcastle in the coming weeks.

Where have these rumours come from? I thought his transfer to Fenerbache was just about done?

  • Phil says:

Just to clarify Tom hasn’t made a mistake, The Stadium of Light is Benfica’s home ground or Estadio da Luz as they call it.

  • Kevin says:

His transfer to Fenerbahce isn’t done yet. But if Newcastle buys him, then Fenerbahce will look for alternatives and one of them is Papiss Cisse..

Love to see it happen and I don’t think 10m is that steep but there is no way a player of his quality would come to newcastle

Pardew’s transfer policy. Since when has he had a say in who we buy? A puppet who is going to get his come uppance very shortly.

  • N Ireland Toon says:

I didnt think he was 6ft5, can anyone confirm this?? either way we will never buy him, far to good for us. considering the sh1t we have been linked with lately

Cardozo would be a brilliant signing even at 30, £10m for a player who will play until he’s 34 atleast! He’s never really had pace so that’s not a worry that he will slow down, clever football brain, unbelievable left foot, good in the air, and a great hold up player! Would love it if we get him, like to see as a front 3…. Remy Cordozo ben arfa!

It’s never going to happen- i think we need to resign ourselves to the fact that we simply are not a big club… all we seem to do is make noise rather than achieve anything, and lets face it such noise generally makes us look stupid. I’m sick of this club being a laughing stock and would rather we went back to basics and rebuilt the whole lot.

Hahaha yeah right. Hes saying,”Think I will end my career at Newcastle …” hahahaaaaa
