Forget Malouda, Marveaux’s the man!

So, at the weekend Newcastle signed their third player of the summer and surprise, surprise, it’s another Frenchman. It’s not just any Frenchman, though, it’s former Rennes midfielder Sylvain Marveaux. To make the signing even sweeter, Newcastle got Marveaux from under the noses of Liverpool, and aren’t paying top dollar either. So, with the French Newcastle revolution well and truly on, what do we need to know about Sylvain Marveaux?

I don’t want to oversimplify things and no two footballers are ever the same, but you can’t talk about Marveaux without mentioning Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda. Other than them both being French, left-footed midfielders, even Marveaux himself admits there’s some similarities. The 25-year-old said “In France they say I am like Florent Malouda, which is what I hope to do for Newcastle. He is a great player and if I could emulate him I would be happy.” Not only would Marveaux be happy, the Toon Army would be happy, too!

Malouda signed for Chelsea in 2007 and, after a couple of decent seasons, really came into his own in the Premier League. He is an instrumental part in Chelsea’s 2009/10 Premier League winning side and despite going off the boil somewhat last season, is still a top player. He of course cost Chelsea upwards of £13 million and was a couple of years older than Marveaux when he came to England, but there are plenty of similarities.

Anyway, enough about Malouda, lets concentrate on Marveaux. After a decade at Rennes, no-one is expecting the transition to the Premier League to be a completely smooth one. He will take time to settle in, but with a couple of Frenchmen around him, hopefully that settling in period won’t last too long. He also has to recover from a long-standing groin injury on which he had surgery last year, so hopefully him making an impact on Tyneside won’t be delayed by a lack of fitness.

Sylvain Marveaux doesn’t go into too much detail about his game, but says “I think my game is about working hard and scoring goals. I will do my best for the club and for the team and I look forward to making this move a success.” That’s all you can ask from him and if he can match up to any of Newcastle’s former French left wingers, including David Ginola, Laurent Robert and Charles N’Zogbia, he’d have done pretty well. Liverpool fans might be saying they never wanted him, but if he’d have gone to Anfield they’d have been raving about him, so let’s do the same!

how funny geordies make him sound as Messi, he is total crap and will cost NU over 17 millions on vages over 5 years.

    • JP...from The Rock says:

If it goes pear shaped we sell him on a definite PROFIT YOU IDIOT!!! No one ever mentioned Messi but you dumbass!

      • CR says:

All this bickering. The reality is that Liverpool fans knew very little about Marveaux. Not surprising given his recent injury. The reality is Liverpool fans have been largely ambivalent about him. So there was no sense of disappointment him not coming. That being said, he may well be an inspired signing for you and I wish him and you all the best.

        • Billy says:

A condescending Liverpool fan, who would believe it? Liverpool are an average team and have been for years. But I wish you all the best.

    • CrammyMag says:

Good luck with Carroll tho.. Woodgate type thigh injury ! Thanks for the 35 million

  • TheTruth says:

Thanks for signing Marveaux. About 15 games played in 2 seasons. I speak for all LFC fans when I say BULLET DODGED.

“Liverpool fans might be saying they never wanted him, but if he’d have gone to Anfield they’d have been raving about him, so let’s do the same!”

    What a laugh.

    • Chris says:

15 games in 2 years?? Try 48 games with 13 goals!!

    • Phil t says:

48 games in last 2 seasons before he got injured. 13 goals and 7 assists. Jonas has stayed fit but only scored 7 goals in 103 games, and he can’t cross.

  • Phil says:

I can remember the last player snatched from under the noses of Liverpool. He was injury prone too. I think his name was, erm, Owen.

    • JP...from The Rock says:

Errm..he’s free so who gives sh*t?? A great player that Newcastle can sell on a profit if it goes pear shaped. Liverpool fans can say what they want now it’s obvious the are still fuming, why else would they be reading and commenting on this article? lol

  • Mike says:

Lets face it jawdees if Liverpool actually wanted him, he would not have elected to go to your flea infested pit of a club/area

    • jim says:

Typical scowsers.nothing between the lugs, mouths flapping uncontrolable, and they even believe dagliesh is going to take away the bridesmaid tag of always finishing runners up to the Big four.

    • JP...from The Rock says:

How’s Carroll doing in Liverfool?? Still with his leg up laughing his ass off at all you Liverfool fans?? 35M hahaha THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! What muppets!

  • Matt says:

    Go steal some hubcaps.

    • Jonski says:

Typical brainless Geordie quoting a 30 year old “joke” that wasn’t even funny then. I’d like to say nearly as old as your last major trophy win, but that would be pushing it!

  • digital says:

Thanks for taking the risk. Save us doing so. By the way once we have Henrigue, if he turns out to be a half decent buy, we will be back and buy him off you. Newcastle, Liverpools feeder club 2011.

  • SuaRed!!! says:

Are you all that dim and that blind?

Your £35 million is being wasted cheap French based players and mostley for wages! You’d think that after the Michael Owen debacle your club would steer clear of injury prone players. Instead you go for this guy (he failed a medical!!!) and Demba Ba (failed a medical last year when on the verge of joining the mighty Stoke!!!).

Liverpool are not about to give a player (who for 8 months was injured) a 5 year contract guarenteeing him a fortune if he plays or doesn’t play!

Newcastle where his fall back option, FACT! Liverpool will only get players who really want to play for the club from now on! Newcasle on the other hand will take anything on offer!

Also loosing Carroll, Nolan, barton and possibly Enrique (proven Premier League talent) for as gang of if buts and maybe’s smells like a relegation fight to me.

    • JP...from The Rock says:

35M has not been spent at all. If we sell Enrique to Liverpool or whoever we will make a profit. In an ideal world he would stay but he wants Champions League footy, I don’t blame him. His very high wages go and pay the next guys reasonable wageds and so on. We’re not losing money, we’re making it. With still 35M to spend thanks to Liverpool lol we still have time and money on our hands. We’ve already offloaded Nolan on very high wages and gotten a quality, young and Full France International for him with a reduced wage to Nolan’s. Not only that but have signed Marvaeux and Ba on a free. If you don’t see that as good business you must be blind or retarded. Who else has improved their squad quicker in the transfer market?..that’s right no one.

      • Paul says:

Yeah and you lost your best player (Carroll) to Liverpool and now the next best player (Enrique) wants out, you may replace with a couple of decent lads but if they turn out anywhere near as good as the other two then they’ll leave too. Because at the end of the day, your ‘only’ Newcastle!

  • Paul says:

    Haha, he’s utter rubbish

  • Jon says:

Lets face it jawdees if Liverpool actually wanted him, he would not have elected to go to your flea infested pit of a club/area

I am so old I can remember when Anfield was a decent stadium lol

  • JP...from The Rock says:

Marveaux himself has said he didn’t fail his medical. Let’s say that he did, Newcastle are still going to make money out of him.

Are you going to tell me we can’t make at least 1M if we should sell Marveaux due to injuries?? Don’t be so stupid we could sell him for 5M and a limp, I bet someone would pay that for him. The FACT is we got him FOR NOTHING!!! hahaha Livepool read it and weep.

  • jim says:

    I can’t stop laughing….35M HA HA HA……….
Told you so..nothing between the lugs, HA HA HA……………

  • digital says:

By the way, when you losers are being relegated with you second rate squad we will take a few minutes out from celebrating to think of you lot in the champions league. Get Pardew to spend your money on potential suceses not other peoples cast offs and you could, just possibly, could survive the drop. See you losers at Anfield and we will see who is running cool and who is running scared.
Ho and spend that £35m wisely as once its spent that’s it. We just spent halve that amount already and haven’t finished yet by a jordie mile. haha
One way fight you losers have no chance.

  • ste says:

He failed the medical at Liverpool, he’s a crock who quickly bailed and signed up with newcastle as soon as Liverpool pulled out, so he can get some easy money reclining in the Geordie treatment room, with no worries or pressure of needing to win anything, why aye morons.

  • SM says:

Awful lot of scousers getting their knickers in a twist.

  • DJG says:

If he so bad why are all the scousers so bothered about it. Wind your necks in lads; your NOT in the champions league anymore either !!!

  • digital says:

Thats the trouble with small clubs like Newcastle, Middleborough they are championship clubs who think they can make it in the Premiership, They have big ambitions (and dreams)but no real capabillity fullfilling them . You cant compete with us big boys. Only cash you get is as a selling club who then have to buy medical rejects (remember OWEN haha). See if you lot can keep Henrique. You have two chances Fat chance and no chance. See you 42DD breasted lardies at anfield, where halve your best players will be on display in red shirts.

    • DJG says:

Lol Newcastle a championship club, we spent one season there in like the last 15 and walked it. Liverpool are not the club they used to be, er.. sore losers. At least we have always been like this whats your excuse. Next season Man U 20 league titles Liverfool 19. 🙂

  • sy says:

we’ll he’s got to be better then Henderson 20m haha he’s average at best and looked out of depth playing for the u21s, and we are looking to spend our money wisely rather then throw it around at anyone who looks good for half a season. you’ve spent 55m on two average players and liverpool look worse then last season at least we’ve improved our squad.

  • madafaka says:

err…don’t forget…that 35M + Suarez were supplied by Chelsea wahahahahahahaha

  • marco says:

love how you lot are slatting carrol only last season you lot were kissing the ground he walked on,it was liverpool that pulled out of the marveaux deal not the other way around, newcastle will always be a nothing club with empty trophie cabinets

    • DJG says:

Face it Gerrard is finished and Carragher an old man and crap anyway. Now all you have left is mericinaries, just there for the money like Carroll. Carroll doesn’t care about your club trust me you will win nothing next season just like Newcastle so climb down from your high horse and except that you are now a non-top 4 club like Newcastle. Simples.

  • madafaka says:

Thank you NUFC for taking the next “Torres” from us!!!
