What’s the latest Newcastle United transfer news?
After a hugely successful loan stint, during which the 21-year-old scored eight times in fourteen games, Newcastle are reportedly likely to try and sign Willock on a permanent basis.
Indeed, that won’t be easy considering Mikel Arteta has talked about how he wants to integrate the midfielder back into the team next season and, in a message posted on his social media account, the England U21 international appeared to be saying goodbye to the club.
However, taking to Twitter, Edwards suggested that the post was just par for course in that his loan spell is over but that doesn’t mean Newcastle won’t try to bring him back to St James’ Park over the course of the summer.
How important has Willock been?
Amazingly, the club had deals for both him and Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury lined up during the dying embers of the January transfer window and could well have moved for the latter instead, were it not for problems behind the scenes.
Only Callum Wilson scored more goals and only Isaac Hayden averaged more tackles per game (via WhoScored) showing just how important Willock was in adding a sense of dynamism from central midfield, an area of the team Newcastle haven’t spent money on since the summer of 2017.
What did Willock say in his Instagram post?
After scoring in his seventh game in a row against Fulham, Willock posted an emotional message on his Instagram page.
“Thank you for rocking with me,” he wrote.
“I will never forget the love you have showed me, the team, the fans, the city will always hold a special place in my heart.
“#UTM (up the Maggies). Goodbye.”
