Steve Bruce is only likely to be handed a transfer kitty of under £10m this summer, according to Football Insider.
What’s the latest Newcastle United news?
They claim owner Mike Ashley – who recently spoke out against the ‘dark forces’ preventing Newcastle from realising their potential – is reluctant to spend money while takeover talks continue.
As a result, Bruce is in line for a budget of under £10m in an effort to improve his squad this summer.
Would Steve Bruce be happy with that?
That seems unlikely.
Given there is arguably a perception of Bruce being a man happy to work under the Ashley regime, it might be tempting to think that the 60-year-old would be happy with his lot. Still, reports in The Daily Telegraph earlier this month suggested his future could be dependant on what funds he is afforded to try and improve this team.
With that in mind, perhaps he could feel as if he’s not being backed, something Rafa Benitez also said he felt upon leaving the club in 2019.
What are Newcastle looking for this summer?
The Athletic have also recently claimed Bruce has begun scouring the market for free agents and potential loan deals this summer in the expectation he isn’t going to have much money to spend.
Perhaps a period of penny-pinching was to be expected following the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic though, given this appears to be Ashley’s choice with the takeover in mind, surely it is not out of the question to want more money invested into the playing squad.
Joe Willock – who played a huge role in turning the season around – is understood to be valued at £20m which, while expensive, wouldn’t appear to be an unreasonable price to pay. Indeed, he’s someone who’s proven he can work in this team with huge sell-on potential given he is only 21.
Meanwhile, Nothing But Newcastle have been told the club will try to sign Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract.
