If patience is a virtue, then Andy Carroll must be a saint. The Newcastle United hitman has had to wait a virtual eternity for his first start in his second spell with his hometown club, but it’s fair to say that his second full debut – if that’s what we should refer to it as – maybe didn’t go as he might have liked. The big man put in a real shift, and he did get the flick that led to to Jonjo Shelvey’s bizarre goal that doubled the Magpies’ lead in their 2-0 win over Sheffield United, but for the most part, the Toon favourite looked a little off the pace. Perhaps that’s understandable given his persistent injury issues, and perhaps his relative isolation throughout the match was more a result of a flawed system than his own failings, but nonetheless, many Toon fans took to social media to vent their frustrations with the local lad. It will now be interesting to see whether Steve Bruce persists with him next time out against Southampton. Joelinton hardly covered himself in glory when he came on either, and it could be his passivity that gives Carroll another opportunity to prove himself at the weekend.
