OPINION

It’s no exaggeration to say that Newcastle United would be in a vastly worse position if they didn’t have Martin Dubravka between the sticks. The big Slovakian international has been a revelation since arriving for a small fee in January 2018, and he proved his worth again with a fine display in the Magpies’ 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Thursday night. The stopper made a number of fine saves, including one early on that took a wicked deflection in its way towards his goal, and another that required world class reactions to prevent an Oli McBurnie header from hitting the back of the net. So far this term he has averaged 3.6 saves per game for the Toon Army, as per Whoscored, and so many of those have been absolutely vital in the context of the points that Steve Bruce’s men have accrued so far this season. There would be those who might argue that he is one of the better goalkeepers in England at the moment, and perhaps even the best outside of the top four based on current form. Honestly, in his showing against the Blades, that could well be a hill worth dying on.
