Steve Bruce is likely already sweating over his Newcastle United future as Georgie Bingham is spot-on to claim that it’s hard to imagine him being given time to get things right.
The Magpies boss may have only been in charge for two league games so far, losing 1-0 to Arsenal and 3-1 to Norwich City, but that doesn’t mean his future looks bright.
Bingham acknowledged that Tony Cascarino highlighted that Newcastle waited 12 games for a win under Rafa Benitez last season, and she claimed that she just couldn’t imagine Bruce making it to six games if he didn’t get a win.
“Cascarino pointed this out in the first hour of the show this morning but you lazy lot were probably still asleep, Newcastle had to go until the…” said Bingham on talkSPORT (8:44am, Sunday, August 18th).
Tony Cascarino chimed in with the date: “Third of November.”
“Third of November! Twelve games in before they got a win under Rafa Benitez last season and you can’t even imagine Steve Bruce making it six games if they don’t get a win to be honest,” continued Bingham.
Bingham is spot-on to claim it’s hard to imagine Bruce making it to six-games, as you feel Benitez was given the benefit of the doubt last season as he has already proven to be a quality manager for the Magpies by guiding them to a 10th-placed finish and because he still had the fans on his side.
Yet Bruce hasn’t got all of the Magpies’ fanbase on his side to say the least.
In fact, several Newcastle fans called for the manager’s head on social media after the loss against Norwich, with Daily Star highlighting several angry supporters, so it’s not like he can rely on them supporting him, to make Mike Ashley hesitant about giving him the chop.
When you consider Newcastle’s fixture list as well, Bruce must be sweating.
Bingham can’t envision Bruce reaching six games in charge without a win, yet the Magpies have a tough set of fixtures coming up.
Newcastle are next in action against last season’s Champions League finalist, Tottenham, then have Leicester City in the League Cup, they then face a Watford side who reached the FA Cup final last season and if that wasn’t bad enough, the Magpies then have to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool, who only lost one league game in their 2018/19 campaign.
So given that the Magpies aren’t guaranteed wins in any of those games, with their best chance being against Watford as they’ve started the season poorly, Bingham’s claim will likely cause Bruce some sleepless nights.
