Newcastle United have failed in a last-ditch offer to sign Roma centre-forward Patrik Schick on loan, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian reporter claimed via his personal website on Wednesday, with less than 24 hours until the transfer deadline in England, that Schick, 23, has rejected a proposal from the Magpies as he would rather join German giants Borussia Dortmund.

Schick scored just five goals in 32 appearances across all competitions for Roma last season and only started 15 times in Serie A.

OPINION

Based on Schick’s goalscoring record last season, Newcastle have not missed out on much. However the Czech Republic international was very highly-rated before he joined Roma from Sampdoria in 2017 and even Tottenham were linked with a move for him back in January [Sport Media Set]. In his final season at Sampdoria in 2016/17, Schick scored 13 goals in 35 total appearances, which was good for a young up-and-coming striker in Serie A. However his spell at Roma has been poor and it does seem as though it would be best for him to move on before the summer transfer window shuts in Italy. Newcastle have until 5pm on Thursday to sign new players whereas a team like Dortmund, who Schick reportedly wants to join, have a few more weeks to do their business. Schick’s form has not been great but Newcastle fans will pray that he does not light up the goalscoring stats wherever he goes next as he may be seen as the one who got away.
