Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam claimed Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow could make a good move this summer in order to be a real asset for a side.

The Sky Sports reporter shared that he thought the 28-year-old had been forgotten about at the Magpies and that he would clearly appeal to a club due to his top-flight experience.

“Karl Darlow, the Newcastle goalkeeper, he was Rafa Benitez’s No.1 during the season they got promoted from the Championship to the Premier League,” said McAdam on Sky Sports News (15:17, Monday, July 8th).

“He started a good majority of games when they got promoted but found himself out of favour.

“He’s an interesting one as there was a link with Blackburn but we have been told that is a non-starter, he is a player who is 28-years-old, has clear ability having been promoted to the Premier League from the Championship with some top-flight experience.

“He’s another one who has been forgotten about and with a summer filled with goalkeepers who are potentially available, he could be one I think could make a good move and be a real asset for someone.”

Sky Sports previously reported that Blackburn were keen on Darlow’s services before Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie shared, via Twitter, that Rovers boss Tony Mowbray had poured cold water on the report.

OPINION

Hopefully, McAdam is right for Darlow’s sake more than Newcastle’s. The 28-year-old goalkeeper made one appearance for the Magpies in his 2018/19 campaign as he played the full 90 minutes of the Magpies’ disappointing 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. Darlow’s 2017/18 campaign wasn’t drastically better either as he appeared 12 times and conceded 21 goals in the process. With the 28-year-old not featuring much and not exactly thriving when rare chances come his way, then many clubs will forget how good he can be. During the Magpies’ 2016/17 campaign in the Championship, Darlow kept 13 clean sheets in his 34 league outings as a key member of Rafa Benitez’s side. So it’s logical to think he could move to a Championship club become their No.1 and potentially help them win promotion. However, if Darlow doesn’t move soon then his career will continue to stall as it’s hard to see him jumping above the Magpies’ Martin Dubravka in the pecking order anytime soon.
