Ayoze Perez’s switch to Leicester City is all but done, according to Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night that Perez, 25, is on the verge of ending his five-year association with Newcastle United by agreeing to join Premier League rivals Leicester.

TalkSPORT presenter Geoff Peters reported earlier on Tuesday that talks between Perez and Leicester are at an advanced stage and the Spaniard could even have a medical with the Midlands club before the end of this week.

OPINION

Why are Newcastle selling Perez? He’s still got another two years left on his contract and he was the club’s top goalscorer last season with 13 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. Towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign he was in red-hot form by scoring eight goals in nine Premier League outings, so to cash in on him now is utterly ridiculous. It seems like now that Rafa Benitez is gone, Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley are meddling with the squad and boosting the transfer budget for whoever takes charge next in the most nonsensical way possible. Perez is now one of the best players at St James’ Park after several years of inconsistent form and it would seem that Ashley wants to cash in on him while his stock is high. However offloading him to a Premier League rival – a team that Newcastle should be aiming to finish above next season – is pathetic and the Newcastle fans deserve so much better.
