Leicester City have agreed a £30million deal to sign Newcastle United attacker Ayoze Perez, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie.

The reporter claimed via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday night that the 25-year-old now needs to undergo a medical and agree personal terms with the Foxes in order to secure a big-money move to the King Power Stadium.

It is understood that Leicester’s £30million bid for Perez triggered a buyout clause in his contract at Newcastle, who stand to make a major profit on a player they signed for just £1.7million in 2015.

OPINION

If Perez has a release clause that stands at £30million, then there is not too much that Newcastle can do other than accept Leicester’s offer. It looks bad because the Magpies do not have a manager at the moment, but even if they did have a new boss, they would be obliged to let the Foxes talk with Perez because of this clause. It’s not ideal, but this is the kind of news that Newcastle fans just come to expect now a day as the circus behind the scenes continues. Perez cannot be blamed if he wants to join Leicester. They’re a well-run club who are miles ahead of Newcastle in terms of quality and ambition. He might not play as much for the Foxes than he would at St James’ Park, but fans shouldn’t expect plays to stick around when even some of them supporters are also giving up hope on their club. What a mess this summer is turning into.
