Rafa Benitez’s coaches Paco de Míguel Moreno, Antonio Gómez and Mikel Antía will exit Newcastle United if the Spanish manager leaves when his contract expires, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claim that the backroom trio departing alongside Benitez could see the Magpies left without any familiar figures to take charge of the early part of pre-season.

The Chronicle report that the Magpies face an anxious wait regarding Benitez as if he leaves when his contract expires on June 30th, there would be only four days before pre-season training is set to start.

OPINION

The more reports that emerge about Benitez’s future, the more you have to worry about the Magpies. While the Chronicle’s report makes it clear that Benitez hasn’t made a decision regarding his future as of yet, this update highlights the chaos that could occur if he does. Given that it’s understandable that Benitez’s staff will depart with him, you have to wonder what effect all four departing could have on the club’s pre-season preparations. The Chronicle pointed out that the Magpies do have a senior figure at the club in the shape of Neil Redfearn, as he was recently appointed coach of the U-23s, so perhaps he will have to step up. However given that it’s very unlikely he’d be the long-term successor to Benitez, as his previous spells at Rotherham United and Leeds United weren’t exactly covered in glory, he’d only ever be a temporary fix. Based on this update, Newcastle fans should be crossing their fingers even harder that Benitez is not going anywhere, as the mess it might cause is very worrying.
