The chances of Rafa Benitez staying of Newcastle United are “less than 50/50”, according to the Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards.

The Spaniard has yet to sign a new deal on Tyneside, despite his current contract expiring next Sunday, and Edwards is not optimistic of an agreement being reached.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, the reliable journalist said: “I’d say it’s less than 50/50 now but there is still a sliver of hope.”

OPINION

Newcastle United fans will have their fingers crossed that a resolution is found right up until the moment they see Rafa Benitez leaving the training ground with a cardboard box full of personal effects, but if we’re being honest, things are looking bleaker by the day. This is literally just about the last thing that fans will have been wanting to hear, especially from a source as credible as Edwards. The Telegraph man tends not to get things wrong too often, and he also has a tendency to exercise caution in the statements that he does make. As he points out, there is still a sliver of hope that a solution can be found to this conundrum, but at this stage, the Toon Army should be preparing themselves for the worse. If it does come to that, and if Benitez is allowed to walk away, then it will surely be the last straw for many fans, and there will no doubt be open mutiny on the streets of the north east.
