Ant and Dec have responded to Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United exit, calling the move “disastrous”.

The club announced on Monday that the Spaniard will be leaving St. James’ Park when his contract expires on Sunday via their official Twitter.

And the beloved Geordie double act did not mince their words in response.

Writing on their official account, they said: “Disastrous. Those ‘at the top’ of our great club should be ashamed. The great shame is that they won’t be.

“The way they are repeatedly able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is astonishing.

“Thank you Rafa Benitez.

“Mike Ashley – get out of OUR club.”

OPINION

Ant and Dec surely speak for every Newcastle fan here. The double act are the Toon’s favourite sons, alongside the messianic Alan Shearer, and when they speak out like this you have to take notice. The fact of the matter is that the Magpies should never have gotten to this situation in the first place, and while it is unfair to immediately assume that Benitez has gone purely because of the ownership, you would have to assume that he would have been more inclined to agree a new deal had it not been for the dreadful backing given to him by Mike Ashley. Supporters have put up with a lot of nonsense and frustration during the controversial businessman’s tenure, but surely this is the final straw. Unless a top manager can be brought in soon, and unless something seismic changes in the way the club is run, this has to be the watershed moment for a fanbase that has put up with too much for too long.
