Young Boys defender Loris Benito has landed in London ahead of a potential transfer to Newcastle United, according to The Sun

The newspaper claim that the 27-year-old flyer, who has three caps for Switzerland, could be on his way to complete final talks with the Magpies, ahead of a potential move to St. James’ Park after jetting in.

The Sun previously revealed the Swiss ace was a potential target for Rafa Benitez earlier in May, and it is now believed that he could be closer to a move to the Toon after celebrating winning the Super League with his current club, BSC Young Boys.

Benito has featured 42 times for the Swiss club this season in all competitions, scoring a single goal, whilst registering six assists throughout the campaign.

OPINION

Newcastle have had their fair share of defensive problems this season, notably in the left-back position after the club’s decision to sign Antonio Barecca on loan in January didn’t really prove too effective. The Magpies could definitely do with signing a quality left-back, so bringing Benito to St. James’ Park could prove to be a real possibility. Assuming Benitez continues contract talks with the Tyneside club, and remains with Newcastle for the upcoming season, he will need to bring in some defensive assets, and it seems like Benito could be one of the names on his way to Newcastle. As well as winning the Swiss Super League this season, the 27-year old has also gained valuable experience in the Champions League with Young Boys, adding to the list of attractive reasons for bringing the defender to St. James’ Park.  Therefore while Matt Ritchie worked wonders at left-back in the tail-end of the 2018/19 season, it is worth trying to snap up Benito if he is keen on a move.
