Valencia forward Ruben Sobrino sent Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune a supportive message on Instagram after the centre-back confirmed he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament.

The Magpies defender took to his personal Instagram on Monday to reflect on his injury and thank fans for all their support during this difficult time for him.

“After medical examination, the injury I suffered during the last game is an anterior cruciate ligament injury,” wrote Lejeune.

“It’s the same problem I had few months back but on the other knee.

“I’ll have surgery and as I did before, I will make my best to come back stronger. Thank you all for your support.”

Several Magpies players commented on Lejeune’s post to wish him a speedy recovery, with Valencia’s Sobrino commenting to claim the centre-back was his spirit animal and that he was sending him a huge hug.

“Animo animal, un abrazo enorme”, said Sobrino via his Instagram account, which translates as “spirit animal, a huge hug.”

OPINION

Lejeune suffering another serious injury was not the news Newcastle fans wanted to hear. However when he went down during the 1-0 to Crystal Palace, Magpies supporters were no doubting bracing themselves for bad news as it did look serious at the time. The 27-year-old battled so hard to come back from injury this season and since being back in Rafa Benitez’s team has proven his talents once again. Lejeune managed 12 appearances this season, with 11 of them coming in the Premier League, and he looked like a reliable presence at the back. Losing the defender to injury once again is a blow to Benitez, but the only small silver lining is that Lejeune was able to help Magpies get themselves pretty much safe from relegation before being ruled out. Aside from the effect on Newcastle, it is good to see that Lejeune has plenty of players ready to support him as he battles another injury, as he may need to call on his friends like Sobrino for morale support in the coming weeks.
