OPINION

You have to feel sorry for Florian Lejeune. The Frenchman only just came back from one horrific injury at the start of the year, and now it has been confirmed that he has suffered another one, this time to the other knee. The knock came in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon during an innocuous challenge with Andros Townsend, and as soon as the defender crumpled to the ground in agony, you feared the worst for him. Newcastle United confirmed that he had suffered a significant knee injury via their official Twitter account on Monday morning, and also announced that Lejeune would be out for the remainder of the season. The big worry now will be how much this injury will affect him long term. Having already done one knee, to then do the other at the age of 27, you have to wonder if it will have an adverse effect on the rest of his career. The Frenchman will be at least 28 when he returns to action, and quite aside from the physical toll it will put on him, the mental strength he will require to not let that affect the way he goes into matches will be superhuman. All you can do is hope for the best.
