A £20million bid has been made for Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, according to the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the offer has been tabled after Shelvey, 27, slipped down the pecking order at St James’ Park.

The former Liverpool midfielder had missed almost three months’ worth of action due to injury before returning to Rafa Benitez’s first team in early March, but he has since only made two appearances off the bench.

OPINION

It seems as though Shelvey might be on his way out of St James’ Park in the summer because a £20million bid for a player who has been sat on the bench for the last two games could be appealing for Mike Ashley. However as long as Benitez’s future on Tyneside remains in doubt, there is unlikely to be a decision on the future of players until the Spaniard’s contract situation is resolved. Benitez might not fancy Shelvey right now but is he leaves Newcastle in the summer, a new manager might come in and decide to build his team around the six-times England international. If that’s the case then that £20million bid might be kicked into touch and a new contract handed to the midfielder. It’s a complicated situation but hopefully it results in the correct decision being made. At the end of the day, most Newcastle fans would surely prefer it if Benitez stays and £20million is pocketed for Shelvey.
