Alan Shearer delivered a brilliant one word appraisal of Fabian Schar’s first half wonder goal against Burnley on Tuesday night.

The Swiss centre-back stepped up with a long range screamer to give his side the lead in their clash with Sean Dyche’s side at St. James’ Park, and the Magpies’ all-time leading scorer was suitably impressed by the effort.

Taking to Twitter, Shearer wrote: “Sttttrrriiiiiiikkkeeee”, followed by several clapping hands emojis.

OPINION

What a goal this was. Schar just steps onto the ball with one thing in his mind and unleashes a monstrous strike that crashes in off Tom Heaton’s post. Ordinarily, you might be tempted to question the goalkeeper on his positioning or his angles, but the sweetness with with the ball was hit, and the movement the strike generated in the air would have given any stopper in the world serious, serious problems. Schar has a happy knack of popping up with goals for the Magpies, but he has never scored one that has compared to this one, and it must surely be a contender for goal of the month. It’s past Heaton before he can even comprehend what’s going on properly, and it will be a strike that is replayed many many times by supporters. The fact that it helped keep up Newcastle’s fine run of home form only makes it sweeter, but honestly, this was a goal worthy of eclipsing any team display.
