OPINION
Javier Manquillo is not particularly well thought of on Tyneside. To say that the Spaniard has failed to impress during his time at Newcastle United is something of an understatement. Usually, he is shaky and lacklustre, offering nothing going forward and serious scares in his own defensive third. So imagine the surprise when, whisper it, the full-back played well against Burnley. Admittedly, Sean Dyche’s side were very poor, and you would be hard pushed to find many Newcastle fans criticising any member of their side after a fourth successive home win, but even then, for them to say positive things about Manquillo, you know he must have played out of his skin. In defence of the Spaniard, he fought hard for every ball, used possession well, and complimented his attacking colleagues brilliantly. Whether he will keep his place in the side for the game against West Ham on Saturday, especially with Deandre Yedlin also enjoying an impressive patch of form, remains to be seen, but certainly, he didn’t do himself any harm with one of the best performances he has ever put in in a black and white shirt. Rafa Benitez will be hoping that it isn’t some kind of fluke.

Class that first half. For a team in a relegation fight, this has been a very calm, sophisticated 45mins. Everyone playing his part, even Manquillo. Keep it up. #nufc

We were a joy to watch in that first half. What a difference Almiron has made to the whole team. Oozing confidence now. Longstaff is outstanding and Manquillo has been excellent so far. More of that please! #NUFC

Huh. Manquillo did a defensive thing. I'll be damned. #NUFC
