Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in Guingamp striker Marcus Thuram, according to TEAMtalk.

The news outlet report that the 21-year-old – who is the son of France legend Lilian – is attracting the attention of several Premier League sides with his prolific form this season for the Ligue 1 basement club.

TEAMtalk claim that Rafa Benitez is keen on a deal for the young star, with Arsenal looking their biggest rivals for his signature after also stepping up their interest.

Thuram, who stands at a colossal 6’4″ [Transfermarkt], has scored ten goals in 20 games in all competitions this season.

OPINION

Signing Thuram this month would be a masterstroke from Benitez as he looks to beef up his forward line ahead of their relegation dogfight. The Magpies have been too reliant upon Salomon Rondon for goals so far this season, and bringing in a young, hungry forward like Thuram would be the perfect move in the coming days. Thuram is one of France’s up-and-coming talents, and he looks ready-made for the Premier League with his height and strong build. His prolific form this season is a sign of his quality, and while it may take him a while to adapt to English football, he looks perfect for the division. It is not stated how much the 21-year-old would cost, but he is a player who definitely fits in with Mike Ashley’s policy, being young and having a large sell-on value. That could see Newcastle agree a deal for Thuram, but they will have to work quickly with just four days left in the window.
