Newcastle United are in pursuit of Hull City midfielder Markus Henriksen, according to the Sun.

The newspaper’s live blog [10.53am, 31/1] reports that the Magpies are in a last-gasp hunt for the 6ft 2in [Transfermarkt] star along with Premier League rivals Leicester City on deadline day.

The update adds that the Tigers ace is valued at £5million, and that Ligue 1 side Bordeaux have already made three offers to the Championship side to snap up the 26-year-old’s services.

The Norway international has six months left to run on his current contract with Hull.

OPINION

Henriksen may be a player in demand at the moment, but that does not necessarily mean that Newcastle need him in this transfer window. They already have plenty of central midfielders in the shapes of Mo Diame, Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-yueng, Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden, so the need to sign another player in this position is not really paramount is it? Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards may have claimed that the Magpies’ move for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris had apparently fallen through, but that does not mean that they need to suddenly change their attentions elswhere, no matter how good Henriksen may be. They need to focus on getting the relevant deals done instead, and anyway, the fact that Bordeaux have already made three bids shows they are at the front of the queue for his services. There is a very slim chance that United will get him at this point, but that may be a blessing in disguise.
