Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden made it no secret in the summer that he wanted to leave the club by handing in a transfer request.

A move in the last transfer window did not end up materialising, but he was no doubt hoping that things would be a lot different this time around.

With Sky Sports reporting that Aston Villa were interested in signing him on loan, the 23-year-old was obviously crossing his fingers that this would be the time where he finally gets his desired switch. However, boss Rafa Benitez said that would only happen if the club were able to find a suitable replacement in time.

That seems to have taken a turn for the worse, as Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has revealed on his personal Twitter account that the Magpies’ move for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris looks like it has fallen through – something which will have serious implications on Hayden’s short-term future.

Samaris was no doubt considered as Hayden’s potential replacement, so he will likely be fuming in light of this update of the club’s failed move for the 29-year-old.

This means that Hayden will have to see the season out until the summer, but even then it is not guaranteed that Newcastle will find a suitable player to replace him.

Basically, the club will not greenlight a move for 6ft 1in [Transfermarkt] star until they get what they want.

Edwards adds that Hayden’s exit looks incredibly unlikely seeing as it is deadline day – nevertheless, despite the club not being able to grant his wishes once again, there is no doubt that Hayden will continue to do his best for the team in spite of the circumstances.

Yes, he will be angry that nothing has happened this month – but he will just have to keep his fingers crossed until the next window comes about.
