Newcastle United may be forced to speed up their search for a new left-back in the January transfer window now Paul Dummett is having more tests on the injury sustained last week, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on its website that the United mainstay will have the injury – which was sustained while playing for Wales in the UEFA Nations League last week – further examined, which may have a knock-on effect on some of the club’s transfer plans.

His setback may mean that the Magpies will have to speed up their search for a new left-back if Rafa Benitez’ worst fears are revealed – and his long-term absence would be a major blow for the Spaniard.

OPINION

When Benitez found out the news that Dummett had injured himself on international duty, there is no doubt that his heart would have sunk as a result. United were just beginning to get themselves back on track after two wins before the break, and now they could be hit with yet another blow this season. Dummett has already missed two games this season against Leicester City and Manchester United, and Benitez could not afford for him to miss any more at this rate. However, it remains to be seen how long he could be sidelined for – so it is wise that Benitez is preparing to cope with his potential long-term absence. Yes, it would be a major blow, but if the manager speeds up his search for a new left-back, then the fans will not have to worry – and they will have their fingers crossed that he brings in a top-quality one.
