It would be safe to say that not many football fans have heard of Newcastle United midfielder Daniel Barlaser and those that have – likely to be members of the Toon Army – are like to have forgotten he existed.

The young talent is currently on loan at League One outfit Accrington Stanley, so it is not like he has been widely spoken about recently.

However, if Accrington Stanley boss John Coleman’s comments are anything to go by, Rafa Benitez must make sure that other clubs keep their hands of Barlaser.

In an interview with the Independent, Coleman hinted that Preston North End want the on-loan Newcastle playmaker after Peter Risdale – advisor to Preston’s owner – came in to enquire about Barlaser.

“You’re not having him, Peter!” Coleman said to Risdale.

However, seeing as the 21-year-old is impressing at the third tier outfit, Benitez must pull out all of the stops to ensure that he returns to Newcastle rather than moving to any other club.

His loan spell at Accrington expires in January, and this is when the Spaniard must block any attempts from interested parties to sign Barlaser.

The Magpies could do with another midfielder to add to their ranks as cover, and the Turkish youngster fits the bill perfectly – after all, he would be saving Benitez a chunk of money in the transfer window.

It is clear that Mo Diame is not up to the task anymore, and Jonjo Shelvey cannot be relied on to control proceedings – which is why blocking a loan move for Barlaser makes complete sense.

Yes, admittedly he is not proven in the Premier League, but giving young players the chance to step up can really prove dividends.

Benitez must be bold and show he has belief in Barlaser’s ability by ensuring he does not leave the club on loan once again.

He can be a real star on Tyneside – but only if he is given the chance.
