Newcastle United legend Andy Cole reckons that relegation will be knocking on the club’s door if they do not invest wisely in January.
However, despite the Magpies registering their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Watford on Saturday, Cole still thinks that Newcastle’s top brass need to dig deep into their pockets to prevent the drop in May.
He says that the are a high amount of teams around Newcastle who are also contenders for relegation, and this is something that they should be extra-wary about.
“In the Premier League, you have got to invest. If you don’t invest, you are going to struggle. Whatever happens, in January they are going to have to invest,” he told Sky Sports.
“There are a lot of teams around Newcastle United at the moment – that could get see them get drawn into a relegation battle, and they don’t want that.”

Cole is right – without the right investment, Newcastle are never going to progress from the position that they are in now. Yes, the win at the weekend no doubt lifted the team’s spirits, but they cannot rely on results like the one against Watford. It’s not like they breezed to victory – if anything, they could have gone behind several times in the first half. Relying on luck is not the way to go, so the board need to greenlight funds in order to lift Newcastle from their current position. If they do not, then relegation will soon become a very real prospect for the club – especially if they do not get results between now and January. They are clearly riding on their luck, and this certainly is not the way to go from now on. After all, they are still level on points with Huddersfield, who currently sit in 18th place, so it is evident that everything is not rosy at the moment. Nevertheless, investment is vital in January – it just remains to be seen whether Mike Ashley will provide it.
