Newcastle United striker Yoshinori Muto is in contention to face Bournemouth this weekend as his injury is not as serious as first thought, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports that the 26-year-old has had his injury to his calf assessed by the club’s medical team, and after a scan, they have concluded that the injury was not as serious as they first thought – which means he will not be out for too long.

The report says that the first teamer is in contention to face the Cherries this weekend, meaning he is in with a shout of starting up front with Salomon Rondon once again.

OPINION

Many Newcastle fans were no doubt frustrated when the Japan international came off at half time, especially for the likes of Perez, who have not been up to scratch recently. However, even though the substitution was enforced, it may have been the best decision that Rafa Benitez made all game. Perez ended up scoring the winner, and for that, the supporters will forever be grateful. Nevertheless, Benitez must have been sweating at the thought of Muto being out for a long time – so he must be relieved to learn that his injury is not as serious as they first thought it would be. The last thing Benitez needs is another injury, especially to his strike force. He can now go with the same team that secured victory over Watford on Saturday, even if Perez did perform well, as there is no point fixing something that is not broke.
