Salomon Rondon is due to finalise his move to Newcastle in time for the Premier League kick-off next weekend, according to the Sun.

The newspaper report on their website that the Championship frontman is on the verge of a £17 million move to Tyneside, and is due to finalise the switch in the coming days after being left out West Brom’s squad in their defeat against Bolton.

The Venezuela international has been a long term target for boss Rafa Benitez, and has netted 28 goals in 120 appearances for the Baggies.

Rondon has made his intentions clear that he wants to continue playing in the top-flight, and Toon forward Dwight Gayle is poised to take his place after agreeing his wages with West Brom.

OPINION

Despite the financial woes that Benitez has had to contend with, there is finally some good news in the shape of Rondon’s imminent arrival at St James’ Park. Newcastle have been crying out for another striker to join their attack, and they have certainly got a promising talent in the 28-year-old. He may not have the most prolific scoring record, but he will undoubtedly make a difference to the team and improve on their opportunities in the final third. Joining a top ten club like United may do wonders for his form, and under Benitez, we may see his goal tally grow into something a lot more special. This is a great deal for the club to be pulling off, and hopefully it will pay off in the long term with an abundance of goals. Newcastle may not have much to shout about at the moment, but the arrival of Rondon will certainly lift the fans’ spirits.
