Newcastle have received positive early feedback on the seriousness of right-back DeAndre Yedlin’s knee injury, according to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope.

Hope, the north-east football correspondent for the Mail, reported on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that there were positive initial signs following tests on the injury which Yedlin suffered during an opening day defeat to Tottenham.

It is said however that the USA international is to undergo more testing today (Wednesday), with an official update expected to follow.

OPINION

This is a hugely promising update for everyone involved at the club, with Yedlin’s injury initially looking rather serious. The American flyer ended up leaving St. James’ Park on crutches following the 2-1 loss to his former team Tottenham, and it was first speculated that he would be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. However, that may not be the case after this update from Hope, although until official confirmation emerges from the club, it is hard to be certain about that. It is safe to assume that the right-back will miss this weekend’s clash against Cardiff in Wales, and will likely have to sit out for a couple of weeks at least. That will pose a big headache for manager Rafa Benitez, who only has Javier Manquillo and Jamie Sterry as potential replacements in that position. Benitez’s failure to bring in full-back reinforcements over the summer is already coming back to bite him, but hopefully the damage will not be too severe.
