A section of Newcastle fans have reacted with extreme anger and frustration after the club issued an open letter ahead of their opening game.

The Toon kick off their 2018/19 Premier League season on Sunday against Tottenham at St. James Park.

The club have written an open letter to the Magpies supporters calling for the fans to support the team after the summer transfer window closed on Thursday, with Lee Charnley, Rafael Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles all putting their name on the letter.

The letter was posted on the Tyneside club’s official Twitter account.

One Newcastle fan said that it was ‘shameless propaganda’.

Nothing but Newcastle have rounded up the best tweets from a section of Toon fans responding to the open letter:

OPINION

Well, this letter obviously did not go down well with the club’s fans. Lee Charnley, Rafael Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles – if they were indeed the ones who wrote it – obviously meant well with this letter to fans and they’re right to want to try and get the supporters on side and to support the team this season. However, they chose completely the wrong moment to do such a letter after such a disappointing transfer window, with many fans still very angry over the state of the playing squad ahead of the new season. The fans will support the team, whatever happens, the Toon supporters have immense passion for their team and they will see this letter as an insult as they support the team every single week and spend their hard earned money on season tickets and kits every single year. This is a disastrous bit of PR by the club and it has only enraged the fans further, there are sure to be some songs sung about it when they take to the field on Sunday in their opening game.
