Newcastle United have written a letter to the club’s fans encouraging them to support the team this season.

There have been murmurs of discontent around St James’ Park after the club finished the transfer window with a reported net profit.

The letter, which is signed by managing director Lee Charnley, manager Rafael Benitez and captain Jamaal Lascelles, and posted on the club’s official website, calls on the Magpies supporters to get behind the team this season, and discusses the recent closing of the transfer window.

“Doing good business in a transfer window is about ending the window clearly stronger than when you started and we believe we have done this. The view we all share is that we have a better squad now than the one that finished tenth last season and all involved have worked tirelessly to make this happen.

“Now, it’s about all of us pulling in the same direction, for the good of the club. This came through strongly in a recent positive call between our owner and senior members of the squad, who agreed that better dialogue going forward will benefit all parties and is in the best interests of the club.

“With the transfer window now closed, the focus should be on unity and getting behind the efforts on the pitch.

“We know our supporters are incredibly passionate and we know that passion will be channelled into supporting the players we have in black and white on Saturday, and every matchday thereafter home or away.”

OPINION

Rafael Benitez and Jamaal Lascelles probably do not agree with the sentiment of this letter but they will no doubt be keen for everyone to forget what happened in the summer and focus on supporting the team on the pitch. For all the transfer business that has been done, or not done in many cases, the results on the pitch will determine the success or failure of this summers transfer window. With the deadline now passed to complete any new signings, there’s no point in getting down about which players the club didn’t get because nothing can be done about that now, but what can be done is getting good results on the pitch, of which the fans, of course, will play a massive part. The objective for the Toon should be to stay in the division, that is of paramount importance, but with a manager like Rafael Benitez, anything is possible.
