Any potential transfer involving Dwight Gayle is being held up as he does not want to leave Newcastle United, according to trusted journalist George Caulkin.

The reliable Times reporter responded to a fan on his official Twitter account asking if the reported swap deal between West Brom’s Salomon Rondon and Newcastle’s Gayle was close.

The journalist suggests that the move is being delayed as the striker doesn’t want to leave Newcastle as things stand.

The 27-year-old has scored 29 goals in 71 appearances for the Tyneside club since joining from Crystal Palace in 2016.

OPINION

It’s understandable why Dwight Gayle would want to stay at Newcastle this season. First, he does not want the club to be relegated and obviously wants to help the team stay in the division. Second, he wants to prove that he can score regular goals in the Premier League, as his record suggests that he’s more suited to the Championship rather than the top-tier. Third, he doesn’t want to drop down a division when he can play top-level football this year. However, in 12 months time, he could have just been promoted with West Brom, having scored a bucket load of goals and Newcastle could quite easily go in the other direction and be relegated anyway. With the lack of investment, the instability and anger around the club, relegation is a real possibility this season and he may be better off in the Midlands, for the sake of his own career.
