Newcastle United goalkeeper Matz Sels has agreed personal terms with Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, according to HLN.

The Belgian newspaper report, as translated by Sport Witness, that the Belgian stopper has agreed a four-year deal with Strasbourg after a move to Anderlecht fell through earlier this summer.

HLN claim that the two sides are yet to agree a deal, but talks are progressing well and Strasbourg are expected to make a big financial push to sign the 26-year-old.

OPINION

Newcastle were always expected to let Sels leave this summer, and it is just a surprise that it hasn’t happened earlier. A move to Anderlecht was all but done before the Belgian First Division side failed to stump up the cash and it collapsed at the last minute. Sels was reportedly left bitterly disappointed in Anderlecht, with the 26-year-old hoping for a return to the club where he spent last season on loan. The Belgian will now be desperately hoping that the same does not happen with this move to Strasbourg, which looks to be progressing at a good pace. Newcastle are obviously keen to let him go, and as long as talks continue apace then there is no reason to think that this move could not go through in the next few days. While this will only be a minor financial boost for the Magpies, anything is welcome at this point as Rafa Benitez looks to bring in several more players before the deadline.
