Newcastle United are in the hunt to sign York City winger Vinnie Steels, according to TEAMTalk.

The football outlet claim that the Magpies along with Burnley, Liverpool, Tottenham, Wolves, Southampton and Huddersfield Town are all keen on the 16-year-old winger who can be signed without compensation being paid due to featuring for a non-league side.

TEAMTalk report that Burnley are very much in pole position to sign Steels as it stands as not only do they have permission to talk to the player, Sean Dyche has taken a personal interest in landing the teenager.

While there are several Premier League teams chasing Steels’ services, it is also believed that Championship duo Middlesbrough and Sunderland are also keen on him.

OPINION

While Magpies fans are worried about the first-team trying to find the right winger to recruit this summer at least their youth team seem to be looking at a potential gem. Given the level of interest in Steels it seems that the player must have something special about him in order for a lot of Premier League sides to be sniffing around his services. The 16-year-old only joined York City from Darlington in February, as confirmed by the club’s website, but it seems that he is already set for bigger and better things. Given that the Magpies released several of their younger players this summer it makes sense that they’re scanning the country to find bright talents to add to their youth system. As a fee won’t be needed to be paid out to get Steels then the Magpies should try to find a way to get in front of Burnley in the race for his signature. However as the Clarets already have permission to talk to the player then the Magpies better get a move on.
