Newcastle United are interested in signing Bristol City defender Joe Bryan but are yet to make an offer for his services, according to the Chronicle.

The local newspaper’s live blog (Monday, 18:39) claimed that the Magpies would have to “wheel and deal” to bring the 5ft 5in tall left-back (Transfermarkt) to the club but that the player would be keen to join if a deal could be brokered.

It was previously reported by The Sun that Rafa Benitez was poised to bid £6million for Bryan as he felt the player’s versatility would allow him to do different roles for the club as well as provide cover in case of injury.

OPINION

It’s no surprise that Bryan would be keen on joining the Magpies as it would be a step-up from playing in the Championship with the Robins. The Bristol Post previously shared that the 24-year-old wanted to play at the highest level possible and it seems like that if a Premier League club comes calling he’d jump ship. While Bryan isn’t the high-profile signing that Magpies have been dreaming of, he would be a great acquisition for the club to make in this window. The pacey player can flourish on the left-side of midfield or as a left-back and is capable of doing a job in the centre of  the midfield if his team really need him to. Bryan sparkled for Bristol City last season in his outings and while he has no Premier League experience he does seem like he’ll be capable of coping with playing in England’s top division. The left-sided flyer should benefit from a move to St James Park as he will be able to improve under Benitez’s guidance given he is still only 24-years-old.
