Newcastle United are close to signing free agent Diego Reyes, according to Calciomercato.

The Italian news outlet claim that 25-year-old centre-back should sign for the Magpies in the coming days.

Calciomercato report that Reyes whose contract with FC Porto expired earlier in the summer has previously attracted the interest of Lazio.

Daniele Longo, who wrote the report, first shared via his personal Twitter account that Magpies were indeed close to signing Reyes.

OPINION

It seems that the Magpies are about to make a signing in the form of a new centre-back. With Chancel Mbemba sealing a move to FC Porto then it’s likely that efforts to recruit Reyes were increased in order for him to replace the gap left by Mbemba in Rafa Benitez’s squad. The Mexican enforcer has 55 caps to his name and will be an experienced face in Benitez’s squad. While it might not be Premier League experience that he brings to the table, he has previously featured in the Champions League when at Porto. Reyes should be able to provide cover for Benitez’s current defensive options while keeping them on their toes as he should have enough quality to regular compete for a place in the first-team. If the deal for Reyes is set to be concluded within the coming days then hopefully a new forward will soon follow him through the doors of St James Park. Benitez really needs to welcome a new attacker soon in order to settle him into the club before his side’s opening game of the Premier League season, which is mere weeks away.
