Newcastle United have contacted Chelsea to enquire about the availability of midfielder Danny Drinkwater, according to TEAMtalk.

The football news site report that Drinkwater is set for another season on the bench at Stamford Bridge after the arrival of Jorginho, with the 28-year-old featuring just 22 times for the Blues last season, mostly as a substitute.

TEAMtalk claim that Leicester are willing to take Drinkwater back after his £35million exit last summer, with Southampton and Crystal Palace also launching enquiries.

OPINION

Signing Drinkwater would be a brilliant move for Newcastle this summer as they look to push on from their impressive return to the Premier League last term. Their troubles this window have been caused by unwillingness from Mike Ashley to release funds for Rafa Benitez to spend, but that standstill looks to have been ended in recent days with the impending exit of Aleksandar Mitrovic. The £20million or so that the club are set to receive for the Serbia international will help Benitez bring in the players he needs in the final days of the window, and Drinkwater would be a brilliant acquisition. Newcastle have been short in central midfield for a while now, with Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame the preferred partnership there, and Drinkwater would be a solid addition to that position. His experience in winning the Premier League with Leicester will also be a good thing to have around the squad.
