OPINION

It is known by the majority of fans that Newcastle do not have much money to experiment with in this transfer window, but it is getting in the way of landing some top-level players.

In this instance, it is Swansea defender Federico Fernandez.

United are said to be keen on a loan for the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) powerhouse, but the Chronicle have reported that the Swans are only willing to part ways with their centre-back is if the Magpies stump up the £10 million fee for his services.

This is a sticky situation for boss Rafael Benitez, who will need another centre-back following the injury sustained by Florian Lejeune – but the only way to do that is give in to the fee demanded for him.

Newcastle do not have the best finances, but once Aleksandar Mitrovic has been confirmed as officially leaving the club for Fulham, then they could potentially recoup around £20 million for him.

They would have no excuse but to give in to Swansea’s demands at this point – there will be no point in remaining stubborn, especially when there is a man with 117 Premier League appearances on offer.

The Argentine will undoubtedly be seeking a move away from South Wales following the club’s relegation, and Newcastle must use this to their advantage and swoop for him while Swansea are decided on his price tag.

The longer they wait – and they do not have much time, as the window shuts soon – there is the increased likelihood that the Swans may change the required fee for Fernandez.

He is the perfect solution to Benitez’ injury woes in the defence, and when Lejeune eventually comes back from his setback, he will provide the perfect cover for him.

A loan may suit the Toon’s needs while one of their players is injured, but this stance is not going to get them anywhere – and they must cough up or face losing out on him for good.
