Newcastle United are interested in the signing of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes, according to A BOLA.

The Portuguese outlet report that the Sporting Lisbon president Sousa Cintra has scheduled a meeting with Fernandes to discuss his future, with Newcastle holding an interest in the midfielder.

The report reveals that The Magpies face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco for the 23-year-old’s signature.

The Portuguese midfielder was in phenomenal form domestically last season, scoring 16 goals and providing 20 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions (TransferMarkt).

OPINION

This is a top player that Newcastle United are interested in. The Portuguese is playing at the highest level and featured in the Champions League against the likes of Juventus and FC Barcelona last season. His record domestically last season was sensational and he’s built himself a reputation as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. Toon manager Rafael Benitez would be doing cartwheels around St. James Park in Mike Ashley can pull this signing off, it would be a real statement of intent to the rest of the league that Newcastle are back. However, as the player also has big European clubs reportedly interested in him, The Magpies don’t stand a chance unless they move quickly in the transfer market, something they haven’t been able to do in recent seasons. The fact they have Benitez in charge is a big draw for potential signings, which might just give them an advantage over others.
