Denmark striker Nicolai Jorgensen failed to lift his side into the World Cup quarter finals on Sunday, and a section of Newcastle fans seem delighted that Rafa Benitez couldn’t bring him to St James’ Park in a reported £20million deal.

Sky Sports reported that Newcastle made a bid of £15million for Jorgensen in January but said that Feyenoord were holding out for £20million.

That proved too much for Newcastle but after Jorgensen’s cameo performance last night, some Newcastle fans are happy they didn’t get him.

Jorgensen came on in the 66th minute with the score tied at 1-1 against Croatia.

He had a couple of chances to finish the tie in normal time but couldn’t find the goal and the game ended up going to penalties.

With both keepers performing heroics, it fell to Jorgensen to take Denmark’s last penalty, with the game poised at 2-2.

He missed a really tame penalty and Ivan Rakitic scored his to send Denmark out.

Here are some Newcastle fans reactions to Jorgensen’s display in Russia last night:

OPINION

Jorgensen had the chance to make his mark on the biggest stage of them all last night in Russia. Denmark dominated the game but couldn’t find the decisive goal, and Jorgensen had his chances after coming on as a second-half sub. He got himself in some good positions but lacked the final touch every time. Missing the penalty was the icing on the cake – and it’s what he’ll be remembered for now by Denmark and Newcastle fans. A section of Newcastle fans made their voice very clear on Sunday night after the World Cup game – they’re glad Benitez didn’t manage to get him in January and they don’t want him to fight for a deal this summer. For some the World Cup is a springboard to bigger things, for others it can be something to forget.
