Newcastle hold a “definite interest” in Danny Ings, according to Chronicle journalist Mark Douglas.

He claimed that Newcastle have tracked him since last autumn, and that while a lot of striker targets have been talked about at Newcastle, Ings would be a good player to bring in.

The Telegraph had claimed earlier that Ings wanted to leave Liverpool and that they wouldn’t ask for a “prohibitive” fee.

The player is reportedly on £60k-a-week at Liverpool.

OPINION

Newcastle need a striker and they don’t have a lot of money – this much is known. For Rafa Benitez then, the options are to take a gamble on someone, either a striker with possible potential – although this didn’t work with Joselu – or a striker with a potential injury problem. Ings has had a torrid time since his move to Liverpool from Burnley in 2015. Injuries have limited him to just 25 appearances for the club, with just four goals scored. Klopp rates him and if Ings can stay fit then he’s a proper Premier League threat. However, his injury problems pose a real problem. Benitez was criticised for signing Islam Slimani on loan when he was injured in January and West Brom were relegated after signing an expensive loan deal for the crocked Daniel Sturridge in January, so Benitez must tread with caution. A permanent deal would seem like a massive risk but a loan deal with provisions in there for injuries could be a masterstroke. That might not be an option though and if Liverpool were willing to accept the £8million they paid for Ings, the 25-year-old could be well worth the risk.
